The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened applications for the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, following the retirement of Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.

According to an announcement made on Monday, applications must be submitted through the Commission’s Fahires portal by 12:00 p.m. on July 29, 2025.

Applicants must be at least 30 years old and have a minimum of seven years’ experience either as a judge or lawyer. Candidates are also required to hold a bachelor's degree in Islamic Shariah, law, or a combination of both disciplines.

Additional eligibility requirements include political neutrality: applicants must not hold any political position, must not be affiliated with any political party, and must not be active in politics.

The vacancy arises following the official retirement of Chief Justice Uz Muthasim on July 20, making him the first Chief Justice to retire since the ratification of the current Constitution. He served in the role from December 8, 2019, until July 2025, having previously been appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009 and serving until 2014 before his reappointment and elevation to Chief Justice.

Until a new Chief Justice is appointed, Justice Uz Abdulla Hameed has been assigned to carry out the responsibilities of the Chief Justice.
