The Parliament on Tuesday accepted a resolution related to K-Park Residences in Hulhumalé, following allegations of fraud and financial misconduct involving the sale of multiple flats.
The resolution, moved by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim, was passed with 61 votes in favour and has now been referred to the Parliament's Housing Committee for further review.
The resolution seeks to establish Parliament’s stance on the matter and to pave the way for Government action based on the committee’s recommendations. It highlights several key concerns raised by individuals affected by the K-Park project.
According to the resolution, multiple buyers were allocated the same flat under the K-Park project. It also notes that money was collected from multiple individuals under the promise of selling flats, causing significant financial losses. Additional issues cited include delays in handing over flats after payments were made, and withheld funds which have prevented buyers from pursuing alternative housing opportunities.
The resolution further states that the agreement signed for the K-Park project had implications for social housing policy, as it prevented the buyers from applying for social housing schemes.
During the debate, members of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) party criticised past administrations for failing to resolve the issue and noted that the current Government is taking steps to strengthen laws to prevent similar incidents.
