An amendment to the Water and Sewerage Act has been proposed to mandate the establishment and operationalisation of water and sewerage systems on all residential islands in the Maldives by the end of 2027.
Submitted to Parliament by Abdul Latheef Mohamed, MP for Dhidhdhoo constituency, the amendment requires that these essential services be completed and made operational across all residential islands within the specified timeframe. Responsibility for implementation would lie with the relevant Government authorities.
The current Act, which came into force in August 2020, mandates that systems be established on all residential islands within five years of ratification.
Although initial implementation began under the previous administration, many projects remained unfinished due to financial constraints, including those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Progress stalled further following the change in government.
Since assuming office, the current Administration has resumed and accelerated work on the pending projects. Over the past two years, several systems have been completed and inaugurated.
Most recently, during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to Noonu Atoll, water and sewerage services were officially inaugurated on Maafaru.
