The Government has commenced construction of a new Fitness and Recreation Centre in Noonu Maalhendhoo, reinforcing its commitment to expanding health and wellness infrastructure across the Maldives.
The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu during a special ceremony held on July 22, 2025. The project is part of the initiative to establish fitness and recreation centres, including outdoor gyms, in residential islands nationwide within a two-year period. Implementation has already begun in several islands under this plan.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently undertaking a four-day tour of 13 islands in Noonu Atoll, attended the groundbreaking ceremony in Maalhendhoo. The President’s visit is focused on reviewing ongoing development projects and initiating new ones aimed at improving infrastructure and public services in the region.
As part of his visit, President Dr Muizzu also held discussions with the Maalhendhoo Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions to review the island’s development needs. Key concerns raised during the discussion included the need to protect the island’s eroding areas, construct a protective wall around the turf field, expedite completion of the school building, and expand healthcare facilities. The council also requested that Noonu Tholhendhoo be brought under Maalhendhoo’s administrative jurisdiction due to land constraints.
The President assured council members that the issues highlighted would be considered by the relevant authorities. He also provided updates on local development efforts during the meeting through ministers and officials from State-owned enterprises accompanying him on the tour.
