Velana International Airport (VIA) will implement temporary traffic restrictions on the evening of July 26, 2025 to accommodate the official inauguration of the airport’s highly anticipated new terminal.
The changes, announced by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), are scheduled to take effect from 07:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on the day of the event. During this period, access to the Airport Main Road and Terminal Road will be limited exclusively to authorised vehicles. General traffic will be allowed only up to the Police Post and the Eastern Parking Area. From there, MACL will operate internal shuttle services to transport passengers and staff to and from the terminal.
MACL has confirmed that the temporary adjustments will not disrupt scheduled public bus and ferry services operating between Malé, Hulhumalé, and Hulhulé, ensuring minimal inconvenience for travellers and airport employees.
The traffic changes are part of logistical and security preparations for the official inauguration ceremony of VIA’s new international terminal, a major milestone in the country’s aviation sector. The event coincides with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, adding national significance to the launch. Once operational, the new terminal is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity, modernise airport facilities, and support the country’s growing tourism industry.
