Taxis and private vehicles will not be permitted to enter Velana International Airport (VIA) from the airport police post area during the opening ceremony of the airport’s new passenger terminal, according to the Maldives Police Service.
The restriction will be in place from 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on 26 July, the evening of the ceremony. The Police have issued an apology for any inconvenience this may cause to the public.
The opening of the new terminal, described as one of the largest development projects ever undertaken in the Maldives, is scheduled for the same night. The event coincides with the country’s Independence Day, and preparations are currently underway.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the ceremony as the chief guest. According to the Government, the occasion is expected to be one of the most vibrant national celebrations held in recent years.
