The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has announced that a six-minute fireworks display will light up the skies around Malé on 26 July 2025 to mark the official inauguration of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).

The fireworks will be launched from 19 locations, including 16 sea-based points around Malé and three sites near the airport. The coordinated display is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. and will be one of the highlights of a major ceremony celebrating the terminal’s opening.

The inauguration coincides with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day and is expected to be one of the most spectacular national events in recent memory. The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has also confirmed that a drone show will be part of the festivities.

The new terminal at VIA is a cornerstone of the country’s aviation development strategy and is designed to handle up to 7 million passengers annually. Featuring expanded space, upgraded services, and increased commercial facilities, the terminal is expected to boost operational efficiency and significantly enhance the passenger experience.
