Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his two-day state visit to the Maldives, describing his talks with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as productive and saying they would inject new energy into bilateral relations.
Arriving on Friday at the invitation of President Dr Muizzu, PM Modi was warmly received at Velana International Airport and accorded a ceremonial welcome in the capital, Malé. The visit marked his first state visit to the Maldives since beginning his third term and coincided with the celebration of 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The visit focused on enhancing cooperation across various sectors. During official talks, PM Modi and President Dr Muizzu witnessed the exchange of several key agreements and memoranda of understanding, reaffirming their commitment to collaborative development.
Highlights included the joint virtual inauguration of critical development projects and a tree-planting ceremony at Sultan Park, symbolising the close friendship between the countries. PM Modi also gifted two Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes to the Maldives, reflecting India’s dedication to strengthening healthcare collaboration.
PM Modi expressed heartfelt thanks to President Dr Muizzu, the Maldivian Government, and the people for their warm hospitality. He said he was deeply honoured to witness the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations.
In an earlier post on X, he praised the Maldivian people’s rich cultural heritage and noble spirit, acknowledging the nation’s progress in areas ranging from cultural preservation to climate action, which have helped secure its distinct place on the international stage.
Prior to his departure, PM Modi joined President Dr Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed in observing a military display and procession held to mark the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence.
