The Civil Court has ordered former Managing Director of Maldives Gas Private Limited, Abdulla Maumoon, to pay over MVR 1.1 million to Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) after he failed to fulfil his obligations under a property financing agreement.

The ruling was issued in absentia after a civil suit filed by MIB to recover unpaid dues from a property financing facility extended to Maumoon during his tenure under former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.

According to court documents, MIB had released MVR 2.2 million to Maumoon under the facility. However, he failed to pay it in instalments and an additional MVR 7,498.29 in charity, which is a contractual requirement in Shariah-compliant financial agreements. The court concluded that Maumoon had defaulted on the agreement and was liable for the full outstanding amount.

MIB also requested the court to recognise a Rehendi flat, which had been part of the financing arrangement, as applicable for recovery, arguing that Maumoon had failed to transfer the flat as agreed. Maumoon did not respond to the charges, and the court allowed the case to proceed in his absence. Based on the evidence submitted by the bank, the court ruled in favour of MIB and instructed Maumoon to settle the debt within six months of the ruling date.

In addition to the civil case, Maumoon is currently facing criminal proceedings over separate allegations of corruption. He has been accused of misappropriating funds during his tenure as managing director and is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Maldives Police Service. A criminal case has been registered against him for allegedly accepting a bribe of MVR 3.1 million from a company supplying cooking gas to Maldives Gas.
