Maldivian political leaders pay tribute to late Hassan Sobir

Expressions of sorrow and respect have poured in from across the Maldivian political spectrum, as leaders paid tribute to the late Hassan Sobir, recipient of the prestigious Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.) and a long-serving public servant whose career spanned nearly four decades.
Among those who paid tribute was Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, who expressed deep sadness over Sobir’s passing. Offering condolences to his family, he prayed for his soul to be granted eternal peace in Jannat-ul-Firdaus, describing his passing as a great loss to the nation.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also shared a heartfelt message, conveying his sorrow and acknowledging Sobir’s significant contributions to the field of foreign affairs.
Similarly, Former President Mohamed Nasheed described Sobir as a capable and loyal public servant who had guided and advised him at critical moments. He praised Sobir’s wisdom and national commitment, and prayed for comfort for his family and peace for his soul.
Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla highlighted Sobir’s extensive service across various state roles, including his tenure as a Member of Parliament. He conveyed his sorrow and offered prayers for the late statesman and his family.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid described Sobir as a patriot who rendered immeasurable service to the nation. Shahid recalled working alongside him in Parliament, noting that Sobir’s dedication and love for the country were clearly reflected in his legislative work. He also prayed for Sobir’s eternal peace and extended his condolences to the family.
Condolences also came from members of the current Cabinet. Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel acknowledged Sobir’s decades-long contributions to national development. They emphasised his lasting impact on key sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, and tourism.
Hassan Sobir passed away at the age of 73 after a lifetime of public service. Over a distinguished career spanning more than 38 years, he held numerous high-ranking positions and played a central role in shaping the Maldives’ policies on national planning, economic development, and foreign diplomacy.
