Hulhumalé will take centre stage in the Independence Day celebrations today with a vibrant float parade starting at 4:30 p.m. The festivities will continue into the evening with cultural and recreational events at Central Park, running from 8:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The annual float parade, a long-standing tradition marking the country’s independence, features elaborate displays and creative designs from various State institutions. This year, 11 Government entities are participating, showcasing floats inspired by themes of national progress, cultural heritage, and future aspirations.

The Malé leg of the celebration, held last night, attracted large crowds as the parade moved from the Social Centre, along Majeedhee Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu, concluding near the Henveiru bridge area. Institutions presented floats incorporating elements of Maldivian history, folklore, and national identity. The designs also included popular animated and cultural characters, appealing especially to younger audiences.

Participating organisations included the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), State Trading Organisation (STO), Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), State Electric Company (STELCO), Road Development Corporation (RDC), Fenaka Corporation, Maldives Customs Service, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and Maldives Police Service.

In addition to the floats, the event featured cultural games and entertainment provided by several companies, enhancing the festive atmosphere. The float parade has consistently drawn strong public interest and continues to serve as a prominent feature of the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.
