Parliament has approved the appointment of Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed as the new Chief Justice, following a majority vote in favour of his nomination.
The position became vacant after the retirement of former Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, prompting three individuals to submit applications. The Judicial Service Commission recommended Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu from among the candidates and formally forwarded his name to Parliament the previous day for consideration.
The matter was referred to the Judiciary Committee, which held discussions and reached a decision to endorse the nominee. During the parliamentary sitting, 62 Members of Parliament voted in favour of his appointment.
Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed brings decades of judicial experience to the role. He began his career as a Civil Court judge, serving from 2000 to 2004, before undertaking a long tenure at the Maldives High Court. In 2018, he was appointed to the Supreme Court.
Alongside his judicial duties, he has also served as President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal.
