The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating alleged discrepancies in the allocation of 4,000 social housing units developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation in Hulhumalé, following complaints that eligible applicants were unfairly excluded.
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure confirmed the matter had been formally referred to the ACC after concerns emerged over the allocation process. According to a public announcement issued by the Ministry in November 2023, during the previous administration, applicants scoring above 76 points were to receive flats in the first round of distribution under the homemaker housing scheme.
However, during the final draw held on 16 November 2023, some individuals with scores above the stated threshold were not included in the allocation, while others with slightly lower scores were granted flats. Sources indicate that 301 units are involved in the disputed allotments.
The Ministry noted that such discrepancies appear to have disadvantaged qualified applicants and may have served the interests of specific individuals. It has requested a formal inquiry by the ACC to determine whether misconduct or procedural violations occurred.
The issue has sparked renewed scrutiny of the Government's housing distribution mechanisms. In a system designed to prioritise need through a points-based approach, any deviation from established criteria undermines public trust. The Government maintains that its aim is to ensure flats are allocated fairly to the most deserving applicants, while uphold transparency and accountability in the process.
