The Government envisions building a zakat system that is recognised as a model across the Islamic world, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said.

Speaking at a special ceremony held at the Islamic Centre’s Meeting Hall to present letters to the recipients of Zakat Scholarships, the Minister highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening both Islamic education and national development.

Minister Dr Shaheem noted that the scholarships would provide opportunities for individuals to pursue studies in Islamic fields, expressing confidence that graduates of the programme would contribute significantly to the country’s progress.

He further emphasised the importance of passing the Zakat Bill, already introduced in Parliament, to ensure the Maldives develops a zakat system that stands out in the wider Islamic world.

The Minister also underlined the role of the Zakat House, established at the beginning of the current Administration, in consolidating and strengthening the system. With improved resources now available, he noted, the country is better positioned to organise, enhance, and promote the zakat framework.

Zakat scholarships were reintroduced this year after a seven-year hiatus. Minister Dr Shaheem described the initiative as a vital opportunity to advance the nation’s Islamic traditions while fostering socio-economic development. He urged scholarship recipients to make the most of this opportunity and serve the country with dedication.
