The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 87 per cent of construction work on the integrated logistics terminal at Thilafushi has been completed.

The project, led by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), is being carried out in two phases, with MTCC awarded the first phase. MTCC confirmed that the placement of concrete blocks for the quay wall has been finished, while concrete capping work is currently under way.

The integrated logistics terminal is being developed to provide a long-term solution to the space shortage at Malé Commercial Harbour and the Hulhumalé International Terminal. As part of the first phase, MTCC has been tasked with constructing a 60-metre revetment, building an additional 15-metre quay wall, and levelling the ground.

Following MTCC’s work, MPL will proceed with the installation of workshops, office buildings, and lighting infrastructure at Thilafushi. The company has stated its target to complete the ongoing phase within three months.

The development plan involves the phased relocation of operations at Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi. Once the new port is fully operational, the existing Hulhumalé port will be converted into a transshipment port. In addition, North Harbour and T-Jetty facilities will also be moved to Thilafushi.

MPL has said that the completion of both phases of the terminal will ease congestion at existing facilities, making cargo clearance more efficient and addressing long-standing space constraints at Malé and Hulhumalé ports. The relocation of operations to Thilafushi is expected to be completed within the next two years.
