President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Pakistan following the tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by recent flash floods and heavy rains.
In a message shared on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu expressed profound sorrow over the disaster, noting that the Maldives stands in solidarity with the government and the brotherly people of Pakistan during this time of hardship. He conveyed sympathy on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives to the bereaved families and all those affected.
Pakistan has been grappling with severe flooding since Thursday, triggered by torrential monsoon rains that caused rivers to overflow, landslides to collapse homes, and entire villages to be swept away. Rescuers have been working tirelessly to search for survivors, often digging through rubble and boulders to reach trapped residents.
As of Sunday, at least 344 people had lost their lives, with more than 150 still reported missing. The worst-hit area is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 317 fatalities have been confirmed. In Buner district alone, officials reported that 208 people were killed and “10 to 12 entire villages” were partially buried under landslides.
Authorities have warned that the monsoon rains are expected to intensify further in the coming days, raising fears of additional flooding and casualties.
