The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has confirmed that an investigation is underway into the death of a 48-year-old man held at the Atholhu Vehi.

Police identified the detainee as Ahmed Afrah, who was taken into custody on 15 August. He was found unresponsive at around 5:50 a.m. on Sunday during a routine check and was transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

MPS said the case is being investigated by the Major Crime Investigation Department, while the Professional Standards Command has launched an internal inquiry to determine whether there was any negligence. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) have also been informed of the incident.
