Parliament has approved Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood for appointment as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), from among the two nominees submitted by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The second nominee, Mohamed Faris Thoha, did not attain the required 75 marks during evaluation at the committee stage, and therefore his name was not forwarded to the floor for consideration.

Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood has previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Local Government Authority. His professional career includes senior leadership roles such as Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited, Deputy Director at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, and Assistant Director at the Ministry of Education. He has also held the post of Managing Director of Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

The terms of office of Vice President of HRCM, Moomina Waheed, and Member, Aminath Shifaath, are set to expire on 8 September 2025. The President’s Office has on two occasions invited applications to fill the forthcoming vacancies.
