A new 10,000-tonne water storage tank has been completed in Hulhumalé and is now operational.

The facility was installed as part of the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company’s (MWSC) efforts to strengthen water services in the Greater Malé area and ensure sustainable supply for residents.

The tank was inaugurated on Sunday at a ceremony held at the MWSC Hulhumalé Operations Centre by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib and MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed. At 24 metres in height, it is the largest water tank ever installed in the Maldives.

With its commissioning, water storage capacity in Hulhumalé has risen by 79 per cent to 22,600 tonnes. This has also boosted the overall capacity for Malé and Hulhumalé combined from 36,000 tonnes to 46,000 tonnes. MWSC noted that, due to the interconnected Malé–Hulhumalé water network, the new facility will improve supply for both islands.

The company stated that its goal is to provide uninterrupted, sustainable access to clean drinking water and safe sewerage services across the country.

In addition to the tank, work is underway on a new Hulhumalé facility capable of producing 10,000 tonnes of water per day. Scheduled for completion by September this year, the facility will house two reverse osmosis (RO) plants, each with a daily production capacity of 5,000 tonnes.
