The government of Japan has donated five launches to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to enhance its maritime policing capabilities.

The handover ceremony, held today, saw the Commissioner of Police, Ismail Naveen, accept the vessels on behalf of the MPS. Japan’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, presented the donation. The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry, senior police officials, and representatives of the Japanese Government.

Commissioner Naveen expressed gratitude to Japan for its continued support, stressing that the new launches will significantly strengthen the operational capacity of the Marine Police. He noted that the vessels will improve law enforcement at sea, safeguard rural communities, and enable a faster response to maritime emergencies.

Ambassador Ishigami said the donation was aimed at boosting the Maldives’ maritime security and law enforcement capabilities. She added that Japan hoped the assistance would help the police address challenges at sea more effectively.

The initiative is part of Japan’s broader cooperation with the Maldives to enhance public safety and strengthen institutional capacity within the MPS.
