Public Service Media (PSM) has formally launched the Build, Educate, Advance, Motivate (BEAM) Training Initiative to provide training opportunities for young people and media professionals across the Maldives.
The initiative, which is run under Maldives Media Institute (MMI), was inaugurated by Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, Ibrahim Waheed on 17 August, 2025.
The programme aims to expand access to professional training in the media sector. The launch was marked with the signing of agreements between PSM and the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, the Islamic University of Maldives, Avid College, and MI College.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ibrahim Waheed said extensive consultations with PSM had revealed strong demand for such programmes among youth and industry professionals. He described the agreements as an important step in making training more accessible nationwide.
Partner institutions also pledged support for the initiative. The Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives, Dr Ali Zahir, said training would be delivered in management, leadership, and communication skills, with PSM providing technical assistance. Avid College Chairman Abdullah Mushtaq Rashad highlighted plans to incorporate unity and leadership qualities through motivational programmes, while MI College Founder and Chairman Ahmed Mottaki expressed his commitment to offering diverse programmes, noting that the college had recently introduced a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
In addition, PSM announced plans to partner with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Australian High Commissioner to Maldives, David Jessup, confirmed that the Australian Government would cover training costs and provide content, creating opportunities to empower and strengthen the Maldivian media sector.
PSM Managing Director Ibrahim Nasreen said the BEAM Training Initiative would address both the broadcaster’s internal capacity-building needs and wider training requirements identified by the Youth Ministry. He added that the collaboration reflects international standards, with public service broadcasters globally operating similar institutes to support media development.
