Council members of Alifu Alifu Himandhoo have urged the initiation of a land reclamation project during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.
The President met with the Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions on Tuesday as part of his ongoing tour of Alifu Alifu Atoll. The discussions focused on Himandhoo’s most pressing development priorities.
At the meeting, council members emphasised the need to resolve long-standing problems with the harbour channel and called for swift coastal protection measures to address erosion. They also highlighted difficulties in delivering healthcare services on the island.
Education needs were also raised, with the Principal of Himandhoo School underscoring the shortage of classrooms and requesting the fast-tracking of plans to build 12 additional classrooms. The WDC called for the development of a handball court to benefit the island’s youth and wider community.
Responding to the concerns, President Dr Muizzu stated the Government would prioritise feasible solutions and provided updates on current projects alongside Cabinet Ministers and senior State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) officials.
