Parliament has gone into recess following the conclusion of its second session of the year, with the final sitting held on Tuesday.

Over the course of the session, a total of 27 sittings were convened, amounting to 46 hours of debate and proceedings on the floor. Alongside plenary activity, various Parliament committees were also active, holding 127 meetings which collectively lasted more than 91 hours.

The second session addressed a considerable legislative workload. Twenty-four bills were taken up for consideration, though only seven were completed before the recess. Among the major pieces of legislation passed are amendments to the Thalassaemia Control Act, revisions to the Decentralisation Act, the Water and Sanitation Act Amendment Bill, the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Bill, the Insurance Bill, and amendments to the National Payment Systems Act.

In addition to bills, six resolutions were submitted to Parliament, though none reached completion during the session. The Government submitted 11 motions for debate, with eight of these concluded before adjournment. The Speaker also raised five issues, which included two reports and two further matters that were completed within the session.

Six urgent issues were raised in the Parliament, all of which were resolved, while of the two matters brought before the Parliament, one was concluded.

Parliamentary scrutiny of the Government continued through ministerial questioning, though progress remained limited. Members submitted 77 questions to ministers during the session, yet only eight were answered in full by its close.

With the completion of the second session, Parliament has now entered its recess. The third and final session of the year is scheduled to begin in October and will continue until the end of November, during which several significant legislative items are expected to be revisited.
