The Department of National Registration (DNR) has launched identity card issuance services at the Alifu Alifu Atoll Council, advancing the Government’s efforts to decentralise public services.

The initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to bring core administrative functions closer to island communities and reduce dependence on centralised offices.

According to the department, identity card services will be made available in every inhabited atoll or designated atoll capital by the end of the year. Currently, services are operational in 28 islands.

The expansion aims to make ID services more accessible to residents while improving the efficiency of the national identity system.

Beyond domestic rollout, work is also underway to introduce services in countries frequently visited by Maldivians, including Sri Lanka, India, and the United Kingdom. Malaysia already hosts such services, providing a model for overseas deployment.
