President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled developmental initiatives for Alifu Alifu Thoddoo, including the establishment of a Faculty of Food Science under The Maldives National University, a 30-bed hospital, and the introduction of seaplane services.
The announcements were made during a community meeting with residents of Thoddoo, as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll, where the President pledged to accelerate projects that address community needs.
The President confirmed that the Thoddoo Health Centre will be upgraded to a 30-bed hospital, equipped with intensive care units and other modern facilities. He added that funds had already been allocated and preliminary work was prepared.
On the education front, President Dr Muizzu revealed that the Faculty of Food Science of the Maldives National University will be established in Thoddoo, citing the island’s agrarian background as an advantage for integrating higher education with agriculture and food production.
Transport connectivity was also highlighted, with the President announcing that a dedicated seaplane platform will be established and scheduled seaplane services will begin in February 2026. He said the initiative would ease travel and enhance Thoddoo’s growing tourism sector, particularly during rough seas.
In addition to these projects, the President noted that road development, the construction of new classrooms for Thoddoo School, a police station, council office, and a three-court badminton hall had been initiated. Plans were also outlined for equipping the island’s football ground with lights, developing outdoor gyms and fitness centres, buoy for sports fishing and promoting handball through the construction of a court as part of a nationwide programme.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that these projects would strengthen key economic sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries while ensuring that development efforts reflected the priorities of Thoddoo’s residents.
