President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured the people of Alifu Alifu Ukulhas that the Government will prioritise their development needs, while emphasising that local tourism should expand in line with Islamic principles.
The President made these remarks during a community meeting at the Ukulhas Convention Centre on 20 August, as part of his visit to the inhabited islands of the atoll. He described Ukulhas as home to hardworking and self-reliant citizens, noting its pioneering role in local tourism.
Addressing the residents, President Dr Muizzu announced several projects to be fast-tracked and closely monitored. These include the development of the boat building area, the construction of an office building at Ukulhas School, and the establishment of a sports complex. He further committed to complete the ongoing land reclamation project, approve the land-use plan with an amendment for 250 plots, and hand over allocation rights to the island council next week. In addition, the construction of 50 housing units is set to be awarded to a contractor within the year.
The President also pledged improvements to health and infrastructure in Ukulhas, assuring that new initiatives would be launched to strengthen essential services.
Turning to tourism, President Dr Muizzu urged local operators to ensure their businesses align with Islamic principles. While acknowledging the rapid growth of guesthouses and beds in the atoll, he cautioned that development must preserve cultural values and avoid practices incompatible with local traditions. He reiterated that the Government supports the expansion of local tourism but expects it to remain consistent with national laws and Islamic guidance.
