President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his stance that he has no interest in controlling the media and has never attempted to do so.

He made the remarks during his visit to Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaranfaru while speaking on the proposed Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill currently under consideration in Parliament.

The President clarified that he has not influenced the bill, which was tabled by Independent MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru of Thulhaadhoo constituency. He also noted that PNC lawmakers had been informed that the Government would not seek control over the process.

Under the current provisions of the bill, the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission would comprise seven members, four of whom would be elected directly by the media, with the remaining three chosen through an open nomination process followed by a parliamentary vote.

President Dr Muizzu stressed that his Administration supports reforms that ensure independence and accountability, rather than granting the President direct authority over the commission. He reiterated that the media should operate freely, transparently, and responsibly, ensuring the dissemination of accurate information while avoiding factual contradictions.
