President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the development of an airport in Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo as the foremost priority for the island’s progress.
Observing that Makunudhoo – the most geographically isolated island in the Maldives – has long faced challenges due to limited connectivity, the President confirmed that land will be reclaimed to develop the airport to feature a 1,800 metre runway, managed by Maldives Airports Company Limited. The latter will collaborate with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and relevant ministries to oversee the development, he added.
President Dr Muizzu further added that 22 hectares of land will be reclaimed for infrastructure projects on the island. Speaking in this regard, he noted that plans are underway to upgrade the island’s health centre to a level 4 facility, enabling the introduction of specialist services such as dialysis, radiology and ultrasound. scanning The President added that interim measures would be explored to deliver these services within the existing facility.
The multipurpose hall currently under construction at Makunudhoo School is scheduled for completion within the next six weeks, providing new space for academic and community activities. A dedicated housing project is also planned once land acquisition is completed, President Dr Muizzu stated.
He added that Makunudhoo’s ice plant operations will be transferred to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company to enhance the provision of services and support the fisheries sector.
The President inaugurated passport issuance service and oversaw the awarding of contracts for land reclamation, shore protection, airport development and road modernisation during his visit to the island.
