President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the introduction of a dedicated cargo ferry service to transport farming produce from Haa Dhaalu Vaikaradhoo.
Speaking to the island community during his tour of the atoll, the President noted that farmers had been incurring losses due to the lack of proper transportation to markets. He assured residents that the new ferry service would commence soon.
Dr Muizzu also revealed that the harbour project contracted today would include the development of a beach.
In addition, the President confirmed that a housing project consisting of 50 units would begin next year.
Several sports facilities are also planned, including a swimming track, handball court and outdoor gym. Work on the football stadium and fitness and recreation centre will be fast-tracked, while construction of a skate park will begin by the end of September.
On education, Dr Muizzu pledged to complete the long-stalled renovation of Vaikaradhoo School within this year. He further announced that a branch of the Centre for Holy Quran would open on the island early next year, alongside the construction of a new mosque.
The President described the current condition of the island’s power station as “dire” and prioritised its relocation and upgrade, expressing hope that the issue could be resolved before the end of the year.
During the visit, Dr Muizzu also officially inaugurated Bank of Maldives ATM services in Vaikaradhoo.
