The Government has announced the construction of 2,000 new housing units in Kulhudhuffushi City, alongside the resumption of 400 stalled homes, as part of projects unveiled during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the city.

Addressing residents at a community meeting on 26 August, the President highlighted that the new housing initiative forms a core part of his Administration’s strategy to improve living standards while meeting growing demand for affordable homes. Housing allocations, he noted, will be linked to construction on land to ensure fair and transparent distribution.

In addition to housing, several infrastructure projects were rolled out. The expansion of Kulhudhuffushi Commercial Port was officially launched alongside the inauguration of a new bond zone, designed to improve the import and storage of essential commodities. Developments in the aviation sector also took centre stage, with the foundation stone laid for a new passenger terminal at Kulhudhuffushi Airport, together with further upgrades to enhance capacity.

The visit also saw the groundbreaking for a new Bank of Maldives Business Centre, while plans were confirmed for the construction of an Islamic mosque to begin next year. City-level projects included the launch of phase three of the road modernisation programme and the establishment of a waste and resource management centre.

Sports and youth development were also given prominence. The Government pledged a multi-use football and handball ground, a synthetic track due to begin construction in December, and a beach handball stadium to prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Beach Handball Tournament. The ongoing Kulhudhuffushi Sports Complex project will continue to be developed in parallel.
