The Government has opened applications for the first-ever State's Media Grant scheme for private media outlets; a historic step in supporting the country’s journalism sector.
The initiative is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to strengthen private media operations and reduce financial dependency. The Regulation on Financial Assistance to the Media, published on 19 August, outlines the framework for the scheme. Applications are open until 27 September through the portal mediaapp.one.gov.mv, under the oversight of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts.
A total of USD 1.8 million has been allocated from this year’s State budget, equivalent to 0.1 per cent of projected State revenue. While the regulation usually requires three instalments, the President has authorised a one-time lump-sum payment for this year.
Funding will be distributed based on a points-based system, with outlets needing at least 60 points to qualify. Eligibility criteria include at least three years of continuous operation, registration or broadcasting licences, a publicly available code of ethics, and compliance with tax and pension contributions. Outlets must also pay staff salaries through bank transfers and actively service any outstanding debts. Media groups with multiple outlets may apply for one outlet of each type only.
The Government has said the scheme aims to strengthen editorial quality, foster financial sustainability, and safeguard employment in the media sector. It also forms part of wider efforts to modernise the industry, encourage responsible innovation, and reinforce public trust in independent journalism.
