The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has concluded a training programme in Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo, designed to strengthen local capacity in preparing value-added fish products and managing small businesses.
The week-long programme, held from 21 to 26 August, brought together 12 participants, including eight women and four men. Delivered by technical staff from the Ministry, the sessions provided both theoretical knowledge and practical training. Participants learned methods to develop high-value fish products and were also introduced to essential business management practices.
According to the Ministry, the initiative aims to boost the fisheries sector by equipping island communities with the skills needed to create sustainable economic opportunities. The training forms part of Administration’s works to increase exports of value-added fish products, thereby enhancing profitability and ensuring greater resilience for the industry.
Officials noted that the Government is placing particular emphasis on empowering communities through fisheries modernisation, with similar training programmes being implemented across multiple atolls. By focusing on product diversification and small business support, the Ministry hopes to enable farmers and fishers to capture more value from their harvests while reducing reliance on bulk exports.
