President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for increased investment in health research, stressing the importance of evidence-based decision-making in shaping health policies and interventions.
In a message shared on World Health Day, the President highlighted the growing need to strengthen reliance on proven scientific evidence, noting that the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation makes evidence-based approaches more critical than ever. He underscored the importance of international cooperation and urged countries to enhance investment in research and country-specific data to support effective health responses.
The President also emphasised the significance of the One Health approach, which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health, stating that such initiatives must be guided by science. He noted that the Maldives continues to prioritise evidence-based policymaking, supported by ongoing efforts to strengthen the health sector.
These efforts include expanding digital health services, improving health information systems, strengthening disease surveillance and technical guidelines, promoting healthy lifestyles and early detection of illnesses, and ensuring effective curative care across the country.
President Dr Muizzu further highlighted the Maldives’ collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international partners to benefit from the latest scientific knowledge and practices.
Concluding his message, the President conveyed appreciation to those working in the health sector and called on both Maldivians and the global community to work together under this year’s theme, “Together for Health, and to Stand with Science.”
World Health Day is observed annually on April 7 to mark the founding of the World Health Organisation in 1948 and to raise awareness on global health priorities.
