Maafaru Lagoon in North Ari Atoll has been officially designated as part of Feridhoo, ensuring the island can use the lagoon as a source of sustainable income for future development.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made the decision on 8 September under Presidential Decree No. 22/2025, enacted through powers granted by the Decentralisation Act. The decree amends the existing list of inhabited islands to include Maafaru Lagoon under Feridhoo’s jurisdiction and has been published in the Government Gazette.

The change fulfils a commitment the President made during a visit to North Ari Atoll last month, where he pledged to link the lagoon to Feridhoo’s development and establish it as a picnic island to support local tourism and community needs.

In discussions with residents, President Dr Muizzu also outlined several projects planned for Feridhoo, including a police station, expanded school facilities, a new health centre, and upgrades to the harbour and port areas. The Government has further committed to building sports facilities and a mosque capable of accommodating 500 worshippers.
