The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has announced that applications are now open for the second basic mariculture course under the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme.

The initiative is being organised in collaboration with the Maldives Marine Research Institute and the World Bank supported Transforming Fisheries Sector Management in the South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project.

According to the Ministry, the training will take place in Kaafu Maniyafushi from 18 to 30 October 2025. The programme is designed to strengthen capacity in the mariculture sector and support the growth of a sustainable aquaculture industry in the Maldives.

The curriculum will cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Aquaculture systems
  • Live food cultivation
  • Fish biology
  • Grouper development
  • Sea cucumber development
  • Development of Clark’s anemone fish
  • Pearl cultivation
  • Seaweed farming
  • Disease prevention in cultured species
  • Environmental protection during aquaculture activities

Applications must be submitted with a copy of the applicant’s ID card by 02:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 30 September. If more than 15 applications are received, participants will be selected in the order of submission.

Accommodation will be provided in Maniyafushi, with travel between Malé and the training site, as well as meals and lodging, arranged by the Ministry.

Officials emphasised that training opportunities of this kind are a key part of the Government’s strategy to strengthen the fisheries sector. They noted that such initiatives are crucial for diversifying the economy, creating new opportunities for Maldivians interested in the industry, and advancing sustainable development across the sector.
