President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a percentage of State revenue will be allocated to the judiciary in next year’s budget.
In a post on X, the President said financial empowerment is key for the judiciary to function independently. He noted that a major change was discussed at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, under which the judiciary will gain financial and administrative independence beginning with next year’s budget.
The President noted that a set percentage of State revenue will be allocated to the judiciary as a block grant under defined policies. He added that the amount would be higher than the current budget ceilings established for the judiciary. Work has now begun to bring the necessary legal, technical and systemic changes to implement the decision.
Currently, the judiciary does not receive a fixed proportion of State revenue. Each year, the judiciary submits detailed budget proposals to the Ministry of Finance and Planning, but often raises concerns that the approved budget is insufficient. These complaints are repeatedly highlighted during Parliament’s budget review stage, with shortages affecting renovation of court buildings, recruitment of essential staff and other operational needs.
