The Government has announced that the State Trading Organisation (STO) will begin importing and selling 23 food staples at reduced prices from 15 October, in a bid to strengthen food security and curb rising costs.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed made the announcement at a joint press conference held today with STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim, following a Cabinet decision to bulk import fruits, vegetables, lentils, and eggs through the state-owned company.
Minister Saeed noted that the move forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto commitment to safeguard food security across the country. He added that if the prices of these essential commodities rise before the planned date, STO will take measures to control rates immediately.
Earlier this week, President Dr Muizzu confirmed via his official X account that the Cabinet had approved the bulk import of 10 varieties of fruits, 10 varieties of vegetables, and several other essentials, including lentils, eggs, and potatoes, in addition to sugar, rice, and flour. These items will be distributed through STO to ensure accessibility and affordability.
The Government’s intervention comes at a time when some imported food products have seen sharp price increases, adding pressure to household budgets. Officials expect the new measure to ease the financial strain on citizens while ensuring a steady supply of basic goods in the domestic market.
This policy underscores the Government’s economic strategy of stabilising consumer prices, reinforcing supply chains, and protecting citizens from commodity price shocks.
