The National Institute for Maldivian Heritage Research has announced 40 postgraduate scholarship opportunities for prospective scholars interested in researching Maldivian culture and heritage. Successful applicants will pursue a Postgraduate Degree in Research and Publications at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).
Sponsored by the National Institute for Maldivian Heritage Research, the two-year programme requires scholars to carry out academic research at least twice a month at the Institute. The initiative is designed to strengthen academic work in the field of heritage studies, expand research capacity, and nurture a new generation of heritage scholars. Graduates will also gain opportunities for publication of their research.
Applications are open until 25 September. Candidates holding Level 7, 8 or 9 qualifications under the National Qualifications Framework are eligible to apply.
The Institute, established in January 2024 by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu under the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, was created to revive and preserve knowledge of the Dhivehi language, history, culture, traditions and national identity. It also undertakes translation work, patriotic education, and research initiatives aimed at strengthening Maldivian heritage and nationalism.
This scholarship scheme reflects the government’s efforts to safeguard national heritage while cultivating a deeper understanding of Maldivian identity through academic research.
