Inguraidhoo MP and People’s National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah has clarified that the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill under review in parliament does not contain provisions to regulate or shut down social media accounts.

In a post on X, Falah said the bill, submitted by independent MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru, does not include measures to restrict platforms such as Facebook, TikTok or X. He stated that the public would still be able to use social media freely, even in the event that the bill is enacted.

The MP also expressed confidence in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership, describing him as committed to protecting the future of the country and ensuring continued progress. He contrasted the current Government’s approach with what he characterised as politically motivated actions in the past, adding that recent calls for demonstrations coincided with ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct during previous administrations.

MP Falah also appealed to young people to remain mindful of the importance of credible information and responsible journalism, noting that the Media Bill is intended to establish accountability while addressing the spread of misinformation.

The bill has attracted public attention in recent weeks. While the government has said its purpose is to tackle fake news and strengthen responsibility in the media sector, journalists and media organisations have raised concerns. In response, the Attorney General’s Office has forwarded a set of amendments aimed at clarifying key provisions and ensuring that press freedom is preserved alongside accountability.
