The Addu City Council is preparing to open a new art gallery in the historic Bondoge building in Maradhoo, with the aim of showcasing the city’s history, and culture.
The Council has invited local artists to submit paintings that reflect the heritage of Addu. The theme for submissions has been set as “History, Culture and Antiquated Labour and Economy of Addu City,” a focus intended to capture the region’s unique traditions, trades, and cultural narratives.
Mayor Ali Nizar announced the project to State media, highlighting that the initiative is designed both to promote tourism and to educate residents and visitors about the city’s past. He said that the gallery would bring new life to the Bondoge while also generating income for the Council.
The Bondoge building itself has a notable history. Constructed in 1941 during the Second World War for British soldiers stationed in Addu, it has since served various roles, including as a theatre and later as an administrative building. Mayor Nizar described it as the most complete historical building in the country and confirmed that all necessary facilities are being arranged for the gallery.
Alongside the gallery, the Council is also developing a museum. Although work on this project is not yet complete, it is expected to complement the gallery by further preserving and presenting the city’s heritage, creating what the Mayor described as a comprehensive cultural hub for visitors.
The Council continues to encourage artists to contribute their work, which will form part of the inaugural collection for the new gallery.
