Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee is set to review President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s nomination of Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood as Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

Parliament had earlier approved Shafeeq’s appointment as a member of the Commission on 18 August. The post of Vice President became vacant after Moomina Waheed’s term expired.

Shafeeq has held several senior posts in Government and State institutions, including Chief Executive Officer of the Local Government Authority (LGA), Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Deputy Director of IGMH, and Assistant Director at the Ministry of Education. He has also served as Managing Director of the Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

The terms of Vice President Moomina Waheed and member Aminath Shifaath officially expired on 8 September 2025. Alongside Shafeeq, Ahmed Magsoom has also been appointed as a member of the Commission.
