The first batch of participants in the Maldives National Service Programme has departed, with 340 youths beginning their three-month training in Maafilaafushi, Lhaviyani Atoll.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the programme attracted 1,244 applications, and all those deemed fit will be given the opportunity to complete the training. The first phase will take place in Maafilaafushi, where the selected youths will undergo structured exercises designed to instil discipline, resilience, and civic responsibility.
The programme, regarded as a flagship youth initiative of the current administration, forms part of a wider policy to provide young people with structured training, educational opportunities, and avenues for civic engagement. President Muizzu has announced that the National Service Programme will be held annually from 2025 onwards.
A legal framework is currently being finalised to guide its implementation, and participants are expected to receive a monthly allowance of around MVR 6,000.
