President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that hosting the first-ever Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship in the Maldives is a great honour for the nation and a significant achievement for Maldivians in the international sporting arena.

In a message shared on X ahead of the competition, the President congratulated the teams travelling from around the world and the guests who arrived in the Maldives to witness the championship. He described the event as a golden opportunity to showcase the passion of Maldivians for sport, while also promoting the natural beauty and hospitality of the country. The President expressed confidence that the tournament would deliver strong performances from all competing nations and wished the Maldivian national team a proud result.

The championship is taking place from 18 to 22 September in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi City, at newly developed international-standard beach handball courts constructed by the City Council. It is the first tournament of its kind to be hosted in the Maldives, highlighting the country’s growing role in regional and international sports.

The event is organised by Handball Maldives with the support of the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, the Maldives Olympic Committee, Kulhudhuffushi City Council, and several sponsors and partners.

Officials said preparations for the tournament reflect the collaborative efforts of national institutions and local communities, with the event expected to draw international attention to both the sport and the Maldives as a destination.
