The State Trading Organisation (STO) has confirmed that 23 newly designated essential food items will reach Maldivian markets by mid October, following Cabinet approval to expand bulk imports of staples.
Under the decision, STO is tasked with importing 10 varieties of fruits, 10 varieties of vegetables, and several other essentials, including lentils, eggs, and potatoes, alongside the existing staples of rice, sugar, and flour. The move comes amid concerns over fluctuating food prices and public complaints that basic goods have become increasingly unaffordable.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the measure reflects the Government’s priority to safeguard food security and stabilise costs for households. He emphasised that STO’s expanded role in food supply is not intended to crowd out private businesses but to ensure that commonly consumed goods are consistently available at affordable rates.
The President added that with pharmaceuticals now overseen by a separate State-owned entity, STO will redirect its focus towards strengthening national food security. Plans include acquiring agricultural land on islands, scaling up local production, and investing in poultry farming.
STO has already begun imports under the revised mandate. Oranges sourced from South Africa are now sold at MVR 35 per kilo, while apples are being brought in from Italy and China. The company has pledged to make all 23 items available nationwide before the 15 October deadline, aiming to deliver stable supplies and price relief across the country.
