President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally established the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, in line with the recently ratified Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act (Act No. 16/2025).
The new law, ratified on 18 September, introduces a consolidated regulatory structure for the country’s media landscape. It merges the Maldives Media Council and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission into a single body tasked with overseeing both print and broadcast media.
According to officials, the Act is intended to provide a modern regulatory framework that protects press freedom while addressing current challenges, including the spread of misinformation and ensuring accountability. The law also introduces clearer provisions to balance the rights of journalists with their professional responsibilities, reflecting international standards of media governance.
Until the new commission is fully constituted, its responsibilities will be carried out by an interim committee appointed by the Civil Service Commission. Once operational, the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission will regulate media outlets, enforce ethical standards, and ensure transparency across the sector.
