Vaavu Keyodhoo Council has requested the Government to allocate jurisdiction over the island’s surrounding lagoon, citing its potential to boost sustainable economic opportunities and support community livelihoods.

The request was presented during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island, where he met with council members, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions to review key development priorities.

Council representatives emphasised the urgent need for a land-reclamation project to ease long-standing space constraints and to address a critical shortage of staff at the health centre. They also called for a solution to persistent electricity problems at the school and proposed installing a US dollar ATM to support the island’s growing guesthouse tourism sector.

President Dr Muizzu assured the council that the Government would carefully consider their proposals and outlined progress on current development initiatives.
