President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that migration from Vaavu Rakeedhoo to another island will only take place if 80 per cent of the island’s residents agree.

Many residents of Rakeedhoo have expressed interest in relocating to a developing island near Malé, such as Rasmalé or Gulhifalhu. They said they were not seeking an immediate move, but wished to relocate once comfortable living arrangements and adequate facilities were in place.

“The views of the people on migration have become very clear,” the President said. “Not only the people in the island, we will also seek the opinion of those living outside the island. We need not only a majority of 50 per cent, we need 80 per cent support for migration.”

He assured that if migration is pursued, the Government would provide both housing and compensation for families, ensuring they move to a place with proper services and infrastructure.

At present, Rakeedhoo has a population of around 60, though its registered population is about 360. The majority of those currently living on the island are senior citizens, and there are no school-age children.

The President also assured that ongoing local tourism ventures would not be affected should migration take place. Rakeedhoo is home to two guesthouses, with land already allocated for further developments. “We will look at ways to continue these businesses. Of course, the assurance is that these businesses will not be harmed and will not have to stop,” he said.

In addition to migration, residents raised other concerns during the meeting, including a proposal to reclaim a nearby lagoon for settlement and calls for better transportation services. Responding to this, the President said a reliable connection will be established through the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry system before March next year.

The President noted that, unlike in other islands, a meeting was specifically organised in Rakeedhoo to gather residents’ views on various community issues.
