President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged a comprehensive programme of housing and infrastructure upgrades for Thaa Buruni.

Highlighting the government’s nationwide drive to ease housing shortages, President Dr Muizzu confirmed plans for 30 new social housing units to be built on Buruni next year. The island council, in consultation with residents, will determine whether the homes are constructed on private plots or in a dedicated area, and the plan will be incorporated into the 2025 budget.

A broad infrastructure agenda is also underway. The Environmental Impact Assessment for harbour development, including council-requested modifications, has begun, with construction expected to start later this year. The project includes shore protection works and a pier for reef fishing.

Other upgrades include:

  • Health centre expansion, nearing completion
  • New youth centre, scheduled for completion within six months
  • School air-conditioning installation
  • New volleyball court, expected within four months
  • Police station construction, set to commence shortly
  • Council secretariat building, funded through Chinese grant aid

Additionally, ATM banking services have been launched on the island.

These initiatives reflect the Administration’s commitment to strengthening housing, community facilities, and economic opportunities across the Maldives.
