President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 50 new housing units will be built in Thaa Madifushi in 2026, with the option for construction on either private land or a designated development area.

During his visit to Madifushi, the President inaugurated several key projects, including the fitness and recreation centre, an extension to the island’s health centre, and newly developed roads. He emphasised that all ongoing works will be carried out on an accelerated schedule.

Additional upgrades are also in progress: the ice plant is nearing completion, and a police vehicle is set to be provided to the island before the end of this year.

As part of the visit, the official certificate recognising Thaa Ufuriyaa and Kolhufushi as part of Madifushi’s jurisdiction was formally handed over to the island council. A Presidential Decree finalising this change was published in the Government Gazette on 18 September.
