President announces causeway as part of integrated tourism project for Veymandoo

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Veymandoo–Kinbidhoo Causeway will be constructed as part of an integrated tourism project, designed to generate long-term benefits for the island community and the wider region.
The project, which will cross the uninhabited island of Elaa, has been opened for developers to undertake alongside associated tourism ventures. The Government intends to adopt a flexible investment model, including cross-subsidy options, to encourage private sector participation.
As part of wider policy measures, the President noted that the Government has introduced tax and fee concessions to stimulate tourism investment across multiple atolls. In Thaa Atoll, nine islands have been opened for tourism purposes, with the acquisition fee reduced significantly to enhance the investment climate.
A series of additional development projects were also announced for Veymandoo. Under a land reclamation agreement, 25 hectares of land will be reclaimed, with the works scheduled for completion in the near future. The introduction of the RTL ferry service in Thaa Atoll was also highlighted as a milestone in strengthening economic and social connectivity.
He added that infrastructure works will advance rapidly, including road construction, harbour redevelopment, and harbour expansion. Plans have also been finalised for a modern mosque capable of accommodating 500 worshippers, incorporating solar power and air-conditioning, as well as a new Qur’an centre with classrooms and a library.
In the education sector, President Dr Muizzu announced that the multipurpose hall and a three-storey school building are set to be completed before the next academic year, ensuring improved learning facilities for students.
Healthcare development will see the establishment of a 50-bed hospital, along with the introduction of psychiatry, speech therapy, and physiotherapy services. The President added that these enhancements will assist to modernise healthcare provision across the islands.
President Dr Muizzu added that sports development in the island will include the completion of the long-delayed football stadium, upgraded to FIFA standards, as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art sports complex with a capacity of 1,200 people, which is scheduled under next year’s budget.
